ConnectLife puts out the call for help from platelet donors with a new reward: $10 e-gift card with every platelet donation!

Platelets are consistently one of the most-needed blood donations for Western New York hospitals, and Western New York’s only community blood bank is giving donors a new reason to roll up their sleeves.

Starting in October, all ConnectLife platelet donors will receive a $10 e-gift card in their email inboxes the day after their donation. The incentive aims to get current platelet donors excited to get back in the chair more frequently, as well as convince new donors to give the unique and lifesaving experience a shot.

Platelets help blood clot and are crucial to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, burn victims, and those with bleeding disorders. But the supply of donations is difficult to maintain for several reasons:

  • Platelets only have a shelf life of five days, so they can’t be “stocked up” for times of greater need.

  • Platelet donations take two hours, so it can be difficult to find donors with enough free time.

  • The donations use a large machine that can’t easily be taken to mobile blood drives.

Platelet donors can return every two weeks, unlike whole blood donors who have to wait nearly two months between giving.

“Our platelet donors are really Western New York’s unseen heroes,” said Sarah Diina, Senior Director of Marketing & Community Development at ConnectLife. “Some have given more than two hundred times in the years since we began collecting donations, meaning there are literally hundreds of people in this area who might owe their lives to a single person. Being able to have that kind of impact is pretty incredible.”

Platelet donors will also receive the normal monthly rewards at ConnectLife, which include weekly Buffalo Bills M&T Club ticket giveaways throughout September and October.

Western New Yorkers can donate platelets at ConnectLife centers in Williamsville, West Seneca, and Tonawanda. To schedule an appointment, *text GIVEWNY to 999777, visit ConnectLifeGiveBlood.org or call 716.529.4270.
