The aim of the GTEx project is to increase understanding of how changes in our genes contribute to common human diseases, in order to improve health care for future generations. Launched by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in September 2010, GTEx will create a resource that researchers can use to study how inherited changes in genes lead to common diseases. It will establish a database and a tissue bank that can be used by many researchers around the world for future studies.
 
Organizations involved in this project are the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Health, and the National Human Genome Research Institute. ConnectLife was one of two biospecimen source sites for providing research tissues for the project.
